Ex Oregon detective jailed for drunken driving

MEDFORD, Oregon — A former Oregon police detective will spend a month in jail after his conviction for drunken driving.

After the jury’s verdict Wednesday, Oregon Judge Ray White ordered Ray Leach, 54, to spend a month in jail and two years on probation and pay a $1,500 fine.

The sentence, which also comes with a three-year driver’s license suspension, is standard for a second drunken-driving conviction, White said.

Leach’s blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.08 percent — Oregon’s legal limit — three hours after he wrecked his motorcycle near the Rogue Valley Mall in June 2001.

Leach initially entered a program to keep that charge out of court, but that agreement was revoked last year when he was involved in another drunken-driving crash, allowing the first case to go to trial.

He resigned from the Medford, Oregon Police Department after the second crash and no longer works in law enforcement.
