County to pay $25,000 to raze meth lab home in OregonKlamath County, Oregon will spend almost $25,000 to destroy a Keno, Oregon home used as a methamphetamine lab and to clean up the surrounding property.
That's just the latest of the costs. Including taxes that weren't paid and miscellaneous costs, the county will be out more than $50,000 once the house comes down.
However, the county could recoup some or all of the cost once it sells the 1.72-acre lot. If the sale goes well, it might even make a profit.
The county commissioners have accepted a $24,796 bid from RMCAT Environmental Services to demolish the house and decontaminate the property at 9807 Ben Kerns Road.
"It irritates me to no end when we get these drug houses," Commissioner Al Switzer said. "It falls upon the Klamath County, Oregon taxpayers to clean them up."
Nine suspects were arrested in raids on the house and several other distribution facilities in 1996 in a bust that involved about 60 Oregon officers from several agencies. Homeowner Milton Jacob Jansen, also called Jacob M. Jansen, was among those eventually sent to jail.
Under Oregon law, people cannot live in or use houses where illegal drugs were manufactured until they get a certificate from the Oregon Health Division. Property taxes on the parcel accumulated, and the deed to the property went to the county in 2001.
Linda Seater, who works in the county's property management sales, said back taxes amount to at least $20,000, and there have been miscellaneous costs of about $7,000. She said work on the house will begin in October.
"Hopefully next year we'll include it in a public sale," she said. Given current property prices, she said, the county could get $30,000 to $60,000 per acre for the 1.72-acre parcel.
